Laxness possessed an uncanny ability to weave his characters’ transcendent intuitions into their physical surroundings. Inner and outer life for him feel composed of the same fabric, as when he describes a child’s soul “rising out of his body like frothing milk brimming over the edge of a basin.” It is billed as "World Light by Halldor Laxness, author of Independent People", but in my opinion this one is even better than his more famous work. Laxness has deep compassion for the suffering and missed opportunities of the poor Icelanders of his time, and the contempt with which they are treated by the rich and powerful.
